With the occasion of celebrating 800 years from the signing of the Magna Carta Libertatum, a document representing the foundation of the rule of law in common-law, "The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple", London in cooperation with the Embassy of the United Kingdom and the Faculty of Law, University of Bucharest organized the conference "The Rule of Law and Magna Carta” on Monday, October 19, at the Central University Library.
The conference was attended by the President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Werner Johannis, who held a speech about the importance of strengthening the democracy and the rule of law in Romania. Representatives of diplomatic missions and well reputed legal practitioners from UK and Romania held speeches.
During the conference, a copy of the Magna Carta donated to the Central University Library was presented to the public and the Magna Carta scholarship was launched, supported by the law firm STOICA & Asociaţii. Magna Carta scholarship will be annually awarded to a number of two Romanian students, graduates of public law schools from Romania. The scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to become familiar with the UK legal system, by participating at law classes in renowned universities and by undergoing an intership in a London based prestigious law firm.
Mrs. Cristiana I. Stoica, Founding Partner at STOICA & Asociaţii, presented the Magna Carta scholarship, stating that "it is a great honor for STOICA & Asociaţii to attend this event and to support the Magna Carta scholarship. If we want to have a rule of law in Romania, we must support the young generation. It is a long term process, because the functioning of the rule of law requires a continuous effort from each of us, and particularly from legal practitioners. Therefore, STOICA & Asociaţii is proud to contribute to the granting of this scholarship and I am convinced that the two selected students will prove that they are competent and passionate about legal study. This scholarship will be a unique life experience for the students, but it is also a benefit for each all of us."
